Lee’s winter camp tells story

If landscapes can tell stories, this one surely does.

Here, nestled against the flank of a mountain in Orange County, Gen. Robert E. Lee pitched his tent for the long winter after the Battle of Gettysburg.

Here, he and his Army of Northern Virginia recuperated that long winter of 1863 before beginning their brutal race toward Richmond with Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and his forces the following year.
