Was the Civil War a lost cause for the South from the beginning?

Most historians believe so, even many who specialize in studying the Confederacy. They tend to advance the argument that the South fought against overwhelming odds, or that its military and political losers fought with a failed strategy, or that by the middle of the war, the Confederacy lacked identity and the will to win.
