Last week’s article concluded just as the Union Army, making its final push in the Civil War, was approaching Asheville from Fletcher.

News of Lee’s surrender had already reached the area. The leader of the Union cavalry, Gen. George Stoneman, had gone back to his base in Knoxville, Tenn., leaving his command to Gen. Alvan C. Gillem. And Confederate President Jefferson Davis was on the run.
