News of Lee’s surrender had already reached the area. The leader of the Union cavalry, Gen. George Stoneman, had gone back to his base in Knoxville, Tenn., leaving his command to Gen. Alvan C. Gillem. And Confederate President Jefferson Davis was on the run.
