Historic Fort Jackson hosts Orange Festival for first time simce Katrina

For the first time since Hurricane Katrina, the Plaquemines Parish Orange Festival is back at Fort Jackson this weekend, a landmark that has become an icon of the past in a parish that doesn’t have many monuments left standing.

With Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Gustav and Ike — and the Gulf oil spill threatening its fishers’ livelihoods — Fort Jackson in Buras now stands for much more than the coastal defense envisioned by Andrew Jackson, or the battle site of the Civil War
