Rob Neufeld: Witnesses recall post-Civil War plunder of Asheville

When, on the evening of Wednesday, April 26, 1865, Union troops under the command of Gen. Simeon Brown fell upon Asheville, they had reasons to be fired up.

They had recently heard about the assassination of President Lincoln.

Asheville was one of the last Confederate strongholds at the end of the Civil War.
