Search launched for Civil War soldier’s heirs

When Col. Ira Cory died, he left behind a safe deposit box that set off a mystery nearly 25 years after his death.

Inside the box were discharge papers for Cory’s grandfather and namesake, a Union Army captain of the Civil War. The documents were uncovered by the state Treasurer’s Office as the staff prepared to auction off the contents of some 300 abandoned safe deposit boxes this week.
