No. 98: Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building

The turreted stone building at 228 Main St. in front of the Old Burial Ground is an integral part of Huntington’s landscape.

It gives ample testimony to residents’ desire to honor fallen sons. The Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building was built in 1892 to honor those who died in the Civil War. The cannon in front of the building once stood guard over New York Harbor; the town received it from the federal government in honor of Huntington’s 250th anniversary in 1903.
