Walking stick of man who assassinated US President Abraham Lincoln to be sold

Booth famously shot the American hero in the back of the head as he watched a production at the Ford’s Theatre in Washington.

The cane is engraved to Booth from actress Laura Keene, who was on stage at the time of the murder on April 14 1865.

It was she who identified Booth as the killer and some reports state that the actress cradled the dying president’s bloody head in her arms.

Very cool artifact but even the British media is as bad with facts as ours. Keene was in the play but she was not on stage at the time of the shooting.

Hasn’t anybody considered the distinct possibility that this cane is fraudulent? The fact that Laura Keene’s last name is misspelled on its inscription ought to ring loud alarm bells.

Puzzling how the actress got to “cradle the dying president’s bloody head in her arms”. Of course, it’s likely that no bodyguards were nearby to stop her interference, nor was there anyone to chase down the culprit who managed to jump to the stage and “escape” with a broken leg. I’m guessing that Mrs. Lincoln was totally freaked and needed help herself…not a strong woman. One would think if the cane were authentic, Booth’s family would prefer to keep it among their possessions…no? By the way, I wonder how the South feels about John Wilkes Booth, since he felt he was doing the Confederate States a huge favor.
