National Park Service may buy country club
The National Park Service is interested in purchasing the 60-year-old Gettysburg Country Club.
According to Gettysburg National Military Park spokeswoman Katie Lawhon, talks are ongoing between the park and the club’s owner, Susquehanna Bank. The club closed in 2008 because of financial difficulties.
“We have been in touch with the new owners,” Lawhon said this week. “We’ve been in negotiations with other owners for years, but could never come to a successful agreement. Now, it’s beginning again with the new owners.”

This is great news! Although I’m a bit przzled about Lawhon’s comment about running it as a recreational facility. I would think any land obtained by the service, friends, or whoever would be restored (as close as possible) to 1863 condition. I’m certainly good for a contribution.
JaaCee – I wonder if “recreational purposes” may mean exactly that. After all, restoring it to the 1863 appearance, and allowing park visitors access to it could also be considered a recreational purpose. Remember, the battlefield hosts joggers, bike riders, dog walkers and others. All recreational activities.I wouldn’t worry too much about the semantics. Thanks for commenting!
This would be very nice if a deal can be reached. If this can be reclaimed and made part of the park it would be a great preservation victory.
