Flag flies in tribute to Sgt. Carney

An act of heroism during the Civil War earned Sgt. William H. Carney the first Medal of Honor to be awarded to an African-American.

Now there is an especially appropriate memorial to him at the 128 Mill St. homestead that bears his name: A new flagpole with a flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol earlier this year.

In large part, the credit for the flagpole’s installation belongs to a diminutive but strong-willed woman, Leonora Whyte, a member of the Martha Briggs Education Club, which owns the Carney homestead.
