Civil War mortars in Phillipsburg’s Shappell Park to get spring cleaning

They’re part of the finest collection of seacoast mortars outside of the Fort Sumter National Monument in South Carolina, local historian Randy Piazza says.

Now the three 10-ton Civil War-era weapons in Phillipsburg’s Shappell Park are due for a makeover with help from the Phillipsburg Urban Enterprise Zone and Alpha’s G.J. Oliver Inc.

“It’s a well-known landmark here in town,” said Piazza, who was on the committee formed for the park’s 2006 rededication. “They’re part of Phillipsburg’s history, and these things should be taken care of. So that’s what we’re doing.”
