Restoration work on Wheeler Home preserves history

North Alabama has a fascinating history, and the Alabama Historical Commission was wise to preserve some of that history when it agreed to help restore Gen. Joseph Wheeler’s home at Pond Spring.

If all goes well, the 6,000-square-foot home could reopen to the public sometime in 2011.

Historical Commission funds helped, but many deserve thanks for the renovation. The Friends of General Joe Wheeler Foundation contributed $200,000 to the effort. Education and conservation bonds added $870,000 to the renovation effort.
