Legend’s Newark roots confirmed

NEWARK — Local folklore has always said the house at 26 Harrison Ave. was the birthplace of John Clem, a boy who ran away to join the Union forces during the Civil War around his 10th birthday.

But local historians never have had proof.

Michael Mangus, a professor at Ohio State University, said Monday that is no longer the case.

“Over the past year a small group of us … have made it one of our many purposes to go out and actually document this. We can now unequivocally state he was born there,” Mangus said.
