Lecture to Explore the Johnson County Poor Farm and Asylum

The Johnson County Historical Society will be host to a presentation on the Johnson County Poor Farm and Asylum on Saturday, April 17 at 2:00 at the Johnson County Historical Society Museum (860 Quarry Road, Coralville). Trevaniel Temple, JD candidate at the University of Iowa will present his recent research into modes of poor relief between 1855 and 1865 with attention to the case of Johnson County. Following his presentation, the farm and asylum will be open for tours.

Temple will discuss trends in poor relief in the United States during the 1800’s including popular opinions on poverty, living conditions on the poor farm, and the impact of the Civil War on poor relief.
