Historical Society takes home paintings
At a May 8 auction, the Waltham Historical Society had hoped to acquire a dozen items related to the estate of Civil War Gen. Nathaniel Prentice Banks, who lived in Waltham.
The society was unable to bid high enough for a silver pitcher and goblet at the Willis Henry Spring Estates Auction at the Newton Marriot, but did win two other coveted items: a 19th century oil portrait of Banks, and a watercolor painting of his wife dressed in blue from the same era, said Wayne McCarthy, co-president of the historical society.
