Veterans honor forgotten Salem man on Flag Day

As rush-hour traffic rumbled past, Salem veterans placed a wreath on a large stone yesterday morning at the busy intersection of Essex and Summer streets.

Yesterday was Flag Day, and the stone is a memorial to Capt. William Driver, a Salem native who is credited with naming the American flag “Old Glory.” The monument sits in a park not much larger than an oversized U.S. flag, across from the Witch House and partially hidden behind a sign for the McIntire Historic District.
