Soldiers names revealed by historians

Civil War history and the Eastern Shore may seem to have little in common, but that’s not the case, as Salisbury University history professor Clara Small and the Rev. David Briddell discovered.

Worcester and Somerset, like other counties in the state, were required to fill Union soldier quota obligations. What Small and Briddell found was the previously untold history of the numbers of “men of color,” slaves and freed blacks who became Union soldiers to meet the increasing demand for fresh recruits.
