Thousands expected in Gettysburg to celebrate July 4th weekend

The Battle of Gettysburg began in and around Gettysburg, Adams County on the July 1st. The four-day battle resulted in the largest number of casualties during the Civil War. Now, thousands are expected to grace the area this weekend, taking part in everything from reenactments to battlefield walks.

Many historians say the battle was the turning point of the war. Union forces under the command of Major General George Meade turned back Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia, ending Lee’s invasion of the North.
