Neuse II’s builder dies

John Nix paused for a moment Wednesday as he pulled out a certificate of a $25 stock he bought in support of the construction of an iron-clad Civil War replica of the original CSS Neuse.

Little did Nix know the minute of reflection would turn into a memory forever etched in his brain as the very next day Alton Stapleford – the mastermind of the replica now known as the CSS Neuse II — died.
