Monumental damage by vandals at Oberlin’s Westwood Cemetery

Portions of several monuments to early African-American residents in Westwood Cemetery in Oberlin are gone, including a stone sphere that decorated a monument to Solomon Quinn, who was a black soldier during the Civil War.

Big ruts in the ground near the monument indicate a truck probably was used to haul away the sphere, which had been restored in recent years by Fairplay Stonecarvers and was valued at $500.
