Standing in front of a bright red Civil War train engine known as the General, I was a little embarrassed not to have already known the history of the Great Locomotive Chase — made famous during the 1950s as a Disney movie starring Fess Parker.

On April 12, 1862, James J. Andrews and a band of Union spies quietly stole a Confederate locomotive right from under the noses of guards at nearby Camp McDonald while passengers and crew were eating breakfast at the Lacy Hotel in Big Shanty (now Kennesaw), Ga.
