Blue, grey, and green of the Civil War

“The Civil War was fought in 10,000 places…” is the opening line of the PBS Civil War documentary. Given the chance, the Morris County Parks Commission would finish it by saying, “and at every one of those places there were plants, plants for food and drink, for dying uniforms blue or grey, plants for shelter, and plants for healing.”

Now a program at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum, “Medicinal Plants of the Civil War Exhibit and Cell Phone Tour” outlines the contribution of a variety of different plants during that era in American history.
