Community Mourns Historian Joe Harsh

Centreville’s Joe Harsh died Sept. 13 at age 69, but he remains in the hearts and minds of those who loved him, and his influence in the realm of Civil War history is his lasting legacy. And for a man who was an expert on the Battle of Antietam, it was somehow fitting that his funeral was held Sept. 17 — Antietam Day.

“It was the day the battle was fought,” said Trudy, his wife of 46 years. “For many years, he’d get up long before dawn and go to Sharpsburg, Md., to see the sun rise on the battlefield.”
