1) the South's refusal to accept Northern/Lincoln/Republican Party opposition to the spread of slavery into the new Western territories which led to their secession 2) the firing on Ft Sumter and the April 19, 1861 attack on Union troops on the way to DC in Baltimore 3) the South's faulty anglophile assumption that England's industrial dependence on cotton would force them into the war on the side of the Confederacy
