My daughter in law forwarded an email regarding the origin of taps in which a union officer Captain Robert Ellicombe is the composer. I've alwayw read that it was Butterfield. Any comments?

I've always heard and read the same as you Doc. Although I never trust it as a final source, Wikipedia happens to agree that it was Butterfield. I hope the email your daughter sent wasn't one of those emails that if you don't forward it to ten people, God doesn't love you anymore.

Snopes.com, for one, squashes the rumor that Ellicombe composed 'Taps': http://www.snopes.com/music/songs/taps.asp Snopes, like most of the rest of us, prefer Butterfield as the composer. So,apparently, does West Point.

There are many sites that bebunk the Ellicombe story as a myth,and that suggest neither Ellicombe or his son ever existed. The story of the brave Union captain finding his dead Confederate soldier son with the music in his pocket is rather like an Ambrose Bierce tale.
