I am presently achieving a doctorate in public law at the University of Paris: my subject is "Amnesty for mass crimes granted to ordinary combattants". I know that 3 amnisties were adopted in the US in relation with the Civil War: May 29, 1865 by Andrew Johnson; December 8, 1863 by Abraham Lincoln and another one in 1868.

Could anybody provide me with informations about these amnesties. Why were they adopted and by whom? Under which circunstances? Were some parties ou groups opposed to them? Were they approuved by the population (North and South)? Were they successful in terms of reconciliation process? Etc.

Should I read specific books on this subject?

Thanks a lot.
