I am a former member returning to this ever increasingly wonderful site. In my opinion, this site is THE best source for Civil War comraderie and information,be it by the huge volume of referance links,or word of mouth of all the posters here. And it just keeps getting better every day.
I got interested in the war a few years back, when my brother, who is hardcore student of the war, took me to Gettysburg, and started sending me books in the mail to read.
But what REALLY sent me over the edge and hooked me,was when I learned of a book out there of the letters home of one Pennsylvania soldier of the 100th Pa. Roundheads regiment. The book is titled "Infantryman Pettit: The civil war letters of Corp. Fred Pettit".What sets this soldier apart from all the others for me is,his old homestead sat on the very property that my house now sets. That did it,I was hooked. Now,my civil war library is coming along at a very nice place..if only I had time to read more!!
Like some of the other posters here,I too enjoy reading about the individual acts of bravery and the hardships these men faced. The personal side to their lives really intrigues me.
Anyway, keep the good posts coming,I learn something new here every time I stop by,which is very often.
Welcome back Tim..I am rather new here also and Gettysburg is the battle I stuy up on mostly because of it is located within a 3 hr drive of me..There are a lot of members here who have vast knowledge of the war and it is always fun to debate over some of the issues that come up..And all is done in a friendly way when giving there view of the issue at hand..I have been going to the Burg for over 15 years now on a regular basis. I have to make the trip at least 3 to 4 times a year..I am not sure you could see it all in a lifetime even with the study that I do on it but it sure is relaxing to me and my inner spirit drives me back there time and time again..Not sure about the site your talking about I have never used it..
Welcome. It's great to see another "addict" whose drug of choice is the CW. That's neat you traced the letters back to your own property. Suddenly makes things a bit more personal. It's amazing to think in the great scheme of things...the war was not that long ago. Education and preservation is key. We owe that to every soldier.
