This request is probably asking the impossible but on the off chance ... In the mid 1950's I saw a black and white film supposedly based on a true incident. It was set in a desert area and opened with a car stopping by an historical marker at the side of one the US highways. The marker records the last stand of a small confederate cavalry detachment in the hills that can be seen in the distance. The film then went on to tell the story behind the historical marker. From what I can vaguely remember the detachment was captured by or associated with a Union force, civilians were involved, the indians were hostile. In the end the confederate detachment drew off a force of pursuing Indians and ended up in a blind canyon. There they fought to the death, thus allowing the Union force and civilians to escape. Very probably this wasn't the real story behind the historical marker. I have been trying to track down the name of the film in order to ascertain whether the story was in fact true and to try and find out where and what occurred behind the historical marker, but with no success. As a last desperate effort I wonder if anyone on this forum may have seen the film (mid 1950's), knows of the action itself, which is what I am seeking to find out or is it another furphy put out by Hollywood? I did an extensive search of the internet movie database and what follows is a list of the closets titles I found that come anywhere close to the information you provided A Southern Yankee A Time Out of War Advance to the Rear Drums in the Deep South The Fabulous Texan The one that sounded the closest was: Revolt at Fort Laramie (57) This one sounded close too but it was in the sixties: Journey to Shiloh Hope this helps. Thank you for your efforts Cory. I will look them up. 1957 maybe a bit late, my recall is it was made around 1954 or 1955. I'm sitting here at 5:30 am going through descriptions of historical markers in California because of this post....I really need to get a life   Anyway, that's how I'd try to track it down. Go to http://www.hmdb.org/Results.asp?CategoryID=15 - it's a huge list of historical Civil War markers with desriptions. It's broken down by states, and since you have probably a handful of states it would be, you may find it: CA, TX, CO, AZ are the first I'd check. If you're 100% sure the word "Confederate" is on the marker, you could control-F using that to break it down even more. Have fun! PS- saw nothing in California that matches.

I think I've seen the same movie chrisr. I know for sure it's not "Escape from Fort Bravo" since I re-watched that one about 2 weeks ago. Have you gone to IMDB yet?

I went through each one that was in the early 40s, 50s, or late 60s that had a description that was even remotely close to the original post and thats what I came up with. It is very possible however, that the movie in question has not been properly labeled within the IMDb

I believe this is it- "Warner Bros. ROCKY MOUNTAIN (1950) is something of an underrated western! Based on a real incident in 1865 and from a short story by Alan LeMay the screenplay was written by LeMay and Winston Miller. William Jacobs was producer and the solid direction was by William Keighley. Errol Flynn stars as a Confederate officer (his first time to do so) who with a small contingent of seven men travel 2000 miles to California to rendezvous with an outlaw who has promised to provide 500 men to join with them in the south's faltering struggle. But things don't quite work out as planned when after they rescue a girl from a stagecoach being attacked by marauding Indians they then have to contend with the girl's fiancé (a Union cavalry officer) leading a troop out to search for her. Following a series of complications Flynn - sacrificing himself and his men - divert the attacking Indians away so that the girl can be saved. The picture ends with Flynn and his meager army taking on and being overwhelmed by a large band of hostiles. The final chase and battle with the Indians in a blind canyon is marvellously executed and is the highlight of the movie! "They've seen our backs - let's show them our faces" declares Flynn. Then, greatly outnumbered, and assuming cavalry formation the valiant eight charge the advancing Indian horde only to be wiped out one by one. nope it's definitely "Rocky Mountain"... I remember being too sleepy to finish watching it as a kid. My mom described the ending to me the next morning..exactly like the original poster(and IMDB)have done.
