Rocky Mountain is the movie. The synopsis below, particularly the bit about the dog, confirms it

Thank you to all who contributed. Great sleuthing guys. Just have to find where that marker is.

Cheers
Chris

Thanks Captain Crow but I'm not sure there is any truth to the historical background. Probably a furphy. Have been through the list of historical markers in the link supplied by Javal1 but nothing there in Nevada, California, Arizona or New Mexico.

Cheers
Chris

here's a little more info on the marker in question from a recent book, Gone with the glory By Brian Steel Wills:

http://books.google.com/books?id=sLt9S9pSwhYC&pg=PT1&dq=Gone+with+the+Glory:+The+History+of+the+Civil+War+in+Cinema&client=firefox-a

just type in the name of the movie in the search box in the upper left and you will find the authors take on the marker and RM.

by the way...it's a pretty good movie. I had forgotten about this one until I read your post. I found it on Amazon for $20.00(USD).

Thanks Captain Crow. That answers the question. Looks like it is "Hollywood history". Mission accomplished.

Again, Many thanks.
