Evening all.

There is a brand new Western on the horizon.  Based on a book by Robert Parker, Jr., "Appaloosa" will open to a limited release on 9-19-08, and then full release on 10-3-08.  Movie is directed by Ed Harris, and stars Mr. Harris, Viggio Mortensen, and Renee Zellweger.

Just checked out the trailer for it, and it looks very good.

The official web site for the flick can be found at http://www.welcometoappaloosa.com

Regards from the Garden State,

Renee Zellweger is one of our finest actresses around today.  Not a movie star a real actress.  I love Robert B. Parkers' Spenser series so might just have to see this one .

Thanks Steve.

Can't stand Viggio Mortensen... love westerns so I'll probably hold my nose when it hits DVD.

Me either, I think he thinks he is the new Marlon Brando with his mumbling style of speech.

Hubby and I saw "Appaloosa" this weekend and we really enjoyed it. There were about ten at the 11:00AM show in a theater that seats 300 or more. All people there were our age or older mid sixties and up. That may bode ill for the future of the Western genre of film.

The scenery was fabulous. I loved the architecture of the old western town and the interiors of the saloon, jail and "hotel."

Much about the movie was standard Western fare, even including the very end. Unlike the others above here, Hubbya nd I do like Viggo Mortensen and go see all his movies. We like Ed Harris too. Rene Zellweger was kind of a mysterious person in the story. I wish I knew more about her...what was motivating her behavior.  Perhaps I found her too modern and free for the 1880s. I thought the town bad guy played by Jeremy Irons was suitably menacing. His gang of heartless meanies was even more menacing.

I am fussy about the music in a movie, the soundtrack. I wasn't really satisfied with the background music. Perhaps it was too sparse. Long passages went without music when I think music could have helped. That's just my thing, though.

It wasn't the greatest Western ever made. But "Appaloosa" was a fun, pleasureable way to spend the early afternoon.
