The Battle of Hasting in Oct. 1066 ranks up there with Gettysburg and Waterloo as one of those battles that catches our imagination and is study by every generation that follows. The Battle of Hasting marks the conquest of the English by the Norman's. I ask what do think the reason the Norman's were able to defeat the English on that Oct. day in 1066. Was it the death of the English King Harold during the battle? Was the the use of the theological innovation of the Stirrups used by the Norman cavalry? Was it the Norman's tactic faint retreats to pull the English troops form behind their wall? Was it some other tactic or innovation by the Norman's that gave them victory that Fall day in 1066? Some musing of a long ago battle that changed the world forever...

Another reason to add is the fact that Harold's army had just defeated a Norwegian army earlier in 1066 thus leaving his army tired and potentially weakened. Agree that this was one of the top history changing battles of all times along with the Battle of Tours (Poitiers) in 732 which halted Islamic progression into western europe. Doc C

The Battle of Mohi in 1241 mark the furthest advancement into Europe by the Mongol Horde. The Mongols won the battle and except for the death of the Great Khan Ogedi Europe may have suffered the same plight as the Russian's did at the hands of the Mongols... The timely death of the Great Khan Ogedi was fate....interesting that the nature death of a man change the world as we know it... Some musing...

In eastern Europe, Ottoman Empire was turned back after laying siege to Vienna in 1529. It mark the furthest extension of the Turks into Central Europe. In three centuries later at the battle of Vienna in 1863 the Ottomans were turned back and started their decline of the power in Europe as the borders shrank back towards the Bosporus. Europe turned back Muslim conquest three different times over eleven centuries...
