Actually, I don't think a contraction for "you all" exists. You really are bored, aren't you.

I think, speaking as an English teacher, it's probably y'all, if it actually was a word. I guess it'd be slang. . . Have you tried watching paint dry, JDC?? Pam

Here's a Web site that might help: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yall My take, for what it's worth. 'Y'all' makes the most sense to me, seeing that it's a commonsense (to me, at least) contraction from the words 'you' and 'all.' 'Ya'll' doesn't quite make it for me. First off, you have to accept that 'ya' is somebody's colloquialism for 'you'. And then, the apostrophe is eliminating the 'a' from 'all.' And the whole point of 'y'all' is to include 'all.' Unless, of course, you prefer 'ya'll,' which does have 'all' in it, except that 'all' is therefore incorrectly punctuated by the apostrophe. Anyway, where I come from in Pennsylvania, it was always 'youz guys.'

Pvt. - In Western PA, 'youz guys' is 'younz'. I have no idea how that term evolved. Fortunately it didn't creep its way down the Appalachians or I would be hearing "younz all" in Western NC. The only good thing about leaving West PA was leaving 'younz' behind.

That's okay. I understand your feelings, y'all, considering what happened to youz guys the last time youz were up here in PA at a little crossroads on the way to Harrisburg. . . Pam Last edited on Fri Oct 17th, 2008 11:50 pm by pamc153PA |
