What do you folks think about the Lincoln references and similarities in Obama's speeches, etc? He obviously is much enamored of the man--rightly so. There are other things as well--using the Lincoln Bible as the inaguration Bible, the Lincoln carriage to be used in the inaugural parade. While I am an Obama backer, I am anxious for him to "strike out on his own" without using Lincoln as a touchpoint so often. And I have to admit, though I think he can do so, Obama also needs to begin to prove he deserves to be equated with Lincoln. Those are might big shoes to fill, and I'm interested in seeing how he does it. Just my two cents' worth. Your thoughts? Pam

I'm not an Obama backer, but I sure do hope that he is as good as he talks.

Pres-elect Obama must have skipped over the parts where Lincoln felt that african-americans, I'm paraphrasing here, were inferior to the white race and could not live free within a white society. Doc C Last edited on Wed Jan 14th, 2009 12:28 pm by Doc C |

I'm a strong Obama backer, but I think he's overdoing the whole Lincoln thing. Maybe inevitable with the Lincoln Bicentennial upon us. I'll say this though, if he felt the need associate so closely with a past President, I'm glad he chose Lincoln rather than Kennedy - If I had to listen to 4 or 8 years of "Kennedyesque" comparisons, I would tear my hair out and stick sharp objects in my eyes.

No comparison, the Lincoln commemorative plate has no limits on purchase but you may only buy two of the Obama ones

I feel very similar to Doc. I noticed the other morning during his press conference that Mr. Bush also said he was reading books about Lincoln, and noting the similarities (extremely unpopular in some circles and regularly criticized) they both faced during their respective presidencies. I think my major concern now is that with everything that needs to be fixed, most people seem to be overly concerned about the breed of the next lucky puppy to call the White House home.

I agree Tim. Wonder if the media is going to give Pres. O any free passes, i.e. his treasury sec. appointee. I've been constantly arguing with my daughter, cnn producer, on the fact that I think he gets handled too lightly by the media. Doc C Last edited on Wed Jan 14th, 2009 09:27 pm by Doc C |

Cookie: Insiders tell me he did when he visited the President earlier this month. Also he has been looing on the president for months but as he gets closer to the job, he is starting to adopt some of the same policies and stances he attacked, i.e. getting Osama isn't that big a deal we just need to contain AQ, tax cuts are important for the economy, etc. It's hope and change we can believe in!

Not me, DG. While it is historically significant that an African-American has been elected our President, I believe it is more important that we get beyond his skin color and look at the man. When we can get beyond the color of someone's skin or our hyphenated names, I think we'll be able to turn a corner on the race/ethnicity issue(s). We won't have circled the block, so to speak but, it will be a step in the correct direction. That said, I wonder if he plans on coming into Washington, DC dressed in a cap and cape like Lincoln did. Probably not.

While there has been a few presidents in my adult life that I have not been happy to see elected, I have never, ever, thought of the inauguration of any US president as "crap".

I believe all the inauguration balls and ceremonies are funded by private donations but I agree with you they have gotten out of hand.
