That's quite a few questions in one.

A thread in the reenacting section that might be useful and get you started at looking at the hobby.

Cody; you are looking at a hobby that will cost you between a $1000-$1500 for a infantry impression about half that for arty and considerably more for Cav. Seems expensive, but when weighed against competition shooting, golf or bass fishing it's pretty reasonable.

I would advise doing a LOT of research before deciding upon a unit. Look hard at them and ask lots of questions. Many units have equipment loaner programs that can help you get outfitted. Find out what a units goal is, do they just do living history, do they just like to play war or is it a mix somewhere in between? Decide what you want to get out of the hobby. If you just want to play war I'm probably not going to be the kind of guy to help you much more than making suggestions on the right kind of equipment and other material info. If you want to jump into the real history there are quite a few avenues I can point you at.

Good Luck.

I believe, cody, that Johan is on the road this week so I'll give you an observation temporarily in lieu of his response.

Finding a group that fits you is considerably harder than finding a group that you want to fit. There may be a group concentrating on living history. If you like the people and can get enthusiastic about what the group generally does, then you've found a home. If you don't like them (or they don't like you), there is likely another group nearby that does something else.

The first order, in my worthless opinion, is to find a group you like and join them in whatever the majority finds to be the goal.

Someone on this board knows how you might find Round Tables and Reenacting Groups. (Cue the experts)

Thanks Ole, only just back from a long week.  Tomorrow id off, to sleep and recover.

Cody pretty much everything in the hobby is up to you.  I only do US as I do a specific portrayal.  NY has a plethera of really good outfits from a Zouve unit (I think they're still around) to standard Infantry and Artillery to include several NSSA units where the shooting is all real... just at paper targets.

Many units galvanize, portraying either blue or gray as necessity demands.  Most units will give you at least a year to get your kit together so it's a little easier to spread the expense out.  Artillery is certainly the least expensive to get into as their is no need for the rifle or as many accouterments.  Infantry right behind w/ Cav probably being the most expensive.

My own knowledge of CS is what I have garnered through the net and my dealings w/ some really excellent CS re-enactors.  If you're interested in a CS impression I may not be the best fella to ask.  That would be Steven Cone when he gets back.

A couple sites that might be useful, some include unit information:

http://www.n-ssa.org/  THis is the site for those who want to see how the weapons actually fired.  It's a blast, an opportunity to stand on the line with scores of others sending lead downrange.

http://www.authentic-campaigner.com/  *  A friendly warning: LURK, read and use the search engine before you start asking questions on the site as the mod staff is not tolerant AT ALL.  But IMO it is the holy grail of research on the material culture of the Civil War.  This is the site for those wishing to give it their all, not for those who just want to play. *

http://www.sykesregulars.org/  This is a site worth its weight in gold, every manual used in the war is available to look at there as well as a lot of other valuable information.

http://www.birneysdivision.org/  This is a larger Re-enacting organization; good people.

http://www.69thnysv.org/  The Irish Brigade... a good unit I understand.

http://home.earthlink.net/~dahoude/  A NY unit, I don't know much if anything about them.

I hope that gives you some ammunition for your quest.  Good Luck and I hope to welcome you to the hobby.

If you are interested in Artillery, I belong to Reynolds Battery L.  Our membership ranges from Buffalo, Ny to Corning, NY.  Let me know if you are interested.

Cody:

I just saw your post. I'm the 1st Sgt for the 12th US infantry, Company A based out of Syracuse, NY but we have a strong section inthe Binghamton area as well. If you're interested in infantry, There are various places to get your gear from that are reasonable. What I usually tell my guys is to get what you can afford. there is usually  extra gear in our unit and we loan it out for people who want to try the hobby before making a committment. We do both living histories and "play Guns" as it were locally (In New York State) and out of state as well.

You don't state how old you are. In our unit (and our parent organization, the USV) you must be 16 to carry a weapon We take musicians at age 12. You choose theunit you want to join. If Infantry is not your millieu, there are several good Artillery and Cavalry units in state.

If you're interested in infantry, you can contact me here or pm me at nmacmillan@twcny.rr.com. Good luck in your re-enacting career. You're getting in with the best people in the world. Kindest regards, Neil
