I ride Confederate Cav here in MO. and was wondering if anyone here does a Chaplins impression ?? I am fairly familiar with reenactin been doing it for awhile but new to Christianity and was thinking on a Chaplin impression. My questions would be is it a voted in or appointed position, would it be proper to be a fighting chaplin, and what is your function in your unit, where would you get your insignia for your uniform ect.

Thanks for the help

I would recommend contacting Chaplain Alan Farley of the "Re-enactor's Missions for Jesus Christ." He is one of the most well-known and active of all religious portrayers (on the East Coast).

He is also a great guy, and I'm sure that he could provide you with some insights into the role. His website is at: http://www.rmjc.org/html/homepage.html

Hope that helps.

Hello.  I am a chaplain in the real Army but when I reenact, I go straight-legged infantry.  Unfortunately, "Patriot" with Mel Gibson portrays a country parson who is killed in battle by the infamous COL Tarleton.  That parson was raising a rifle, if I correctly recall.  No, chaplains are not "voted" in- now or back then.  By the Civil War the U.S. had chaplains in the Army's ranks.  The Confederacy adopted the practice our Revolutionary forebears used-- seeking out specific clergy, someone in a nearby town or identifying their pastor or priest from back home (er, the South was Protestant).  General officers had personal chaplains that would accompany them.  Stonewall had perhaps the famous one of the Civil War.  I cant remember, but the dude's first name was a woman's name!

Just so you understand, if you attempt to portray a chaplain for play purposes at reenactments, many people will ASSUME that you really are a clergyman in actuality. Will you be able to portray correctly?  There are a few guys I know who are pastors and do the chaplain deal too.  But I play infantry so I can be persona ingognito.  If you are a new Christian, you may find yourself overwhelmed with more questions or expectations from fellow soldiers or others than you will be able to effectively answer.  They may expect you to speak (preach) or lead a chapel service in the field like most reenacting chaplains do and other things you may just not be prepared for just yet.  But, your welcome to try.  I recommend tracking and watching someone else in action first.  I'll bet you already have.  Best wishes.

Lew ( I ran with 78 PA and 66 OH of Vincent's Brigade)

Greetings from Tal Afar, Iraq!

Greetings,

I am an ordained reverend and I portray both. Most of my time My persona is a  private in the rank and files, but at small events when the brigade chaplain is not there I put on my chaplain uniform and conduct Sunday service. Yes there were many regimental chaplains that picked up the musket and fought alongside their fellow soldiers, if memory serves there were 10 chaplains killed in combat in the CW. You can find many CW chaplain photos on line by going to yahoo and typing ( civil war chaplain pics ). The controvercy over CW chaplain uniforms and rank is big enough for it's own post and quite interesting.

If you would like more info on research, period correct sermons or other help or just like to chat E-Mail me at pvyankee63@yahoo.com
