If anyone saw the CSI tv show re-run last night (the Las Vegas show), it was about Civil War re-enactors.
They found that the charges in the percussion pistols had cream of wheat cereal in the blank charges "to make more smoke".
Now I have been doing Civil War and other period living history since 1963 and I have NEVER heard of anyone putting cream of wheat in a blank cartridge!
Is this really done or is the a TV (urban) myth?
Respecfully,

I know for a fact that alot of folks IN MCWRA do that , I am a member ,alot of the old school guys, some even use COCO Puffs for a wad, in pistol rounds. I guess at least they always have breakfast handy.

I'm beginning to think every crime show on TV does a murder at the reenactment episode.

Yes, cream of wheat is used on the west coast as well. The Cavalry will put a charge of powder in their pistols, the cream of wheat (uncooked) is tamped on top of the powder, this not only holds the powder in the cylinder, but the natural oils in the cream of wheat keeps the pistols from jamming due to powder build up, and yes it makes a nice big puff of smoke.
