I am not certain what question you are asking. Are you goin gto be looking for mass graves near the Hornet's nest? If so, check with Park service folks. They have covered every square inch of that battlefield with imaging equipment that can "see' under the soil.... I am sure they know where every body is buried on the field.
If you are searching off site, what kind of ewuipment will you use? Please do not use any invasive tools ..shovels, etc.. and be aware that it is a felony to dig on NPS land

I am a Shiloh Park Ranger stationed at the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center. I would be delighted to talk to you about Shiloh burials and your quest to find the location of unmarked burial sites. First off I would discourage you from searching for graves within the park boundries without specific written permission by park authorities. All graves on the park, marked or unmaked are protected by law.
If you have found a letter or diary entry which sheds light on a possible burial site I would be intrested in seeing it. Please come by the Interpretive Center during your visit so we can meet and shoot the breeze.
Ed, concerning the burials at the indian mounds. The 28th Illinois Infantry buried thier dead on top of one of the mounds and these dead were reinterred to the National Cemetery in 1866. Severeal years ago archeologists from the Park Service's Southeast Archeological Center (SEAC) operated a ground penetrating radar unit on top of the mound. The scan revealed a "disturbance" in the soil remained in the grave site but there was insufficent evidence to suggest there were human remains. It is believed that some rubbish or possibly clothing was thrown into the exhumed grave before it was filled back in. If there was the slightest thought that human remains were still in the grave site there would have been a dig on the site for verification.

We will definitely not be doing anything illegal. No digging or otherwise disturbing the ground. No removal of anything. Just search about for likely spots.

We won't have any tools but a compass. We really were just looking for a good reason to go the battlefield. Will you be around next weekend? Would love to meet you and talk about the battle etc.

I'd be delighted to meet up with you. I am off on Saturday but will be at Shiloh all day on Sunday. It is rare for me to work at the big park but we will be conducting live fire demonstrations of our artillery piece and I will be in the No. 1 position.

I will be in your neck of the woods this week...I leave Wednesday for San Diego and a business conference there. I will be there till Sunday..with me will be my wife (business partner), along with my son (sales Manager), daughter-in-law (branch store manager) and grandson (10 yr old motorcycle racer and all round good kid!)

Gee Bama that's about 90 miles away from where I am. Sounds like you and your whole family will be there. If you have free time go to Old Town and have lunch or dinner . Also go out to Point Loma and see the light house and where Cabrillo landed . Mission San Diego is worth seeing too.

I have 2 more sons that are not making the trip.. I will have very little free time..between seminars, product shows, motivational speakers and planned meals / banquets, when we get free time... sitting down and relaxing is pretty high on the list...altho we do have aplanned trip to the zoo... imagine taking 3,000 of your closest friends to the zoo...that is what SP Richards, our supplier will do

Well it is one of the best zoos in the world. Hopefully they will get you on the tram to go around the zoo and then you can sit down. Haven't been down to the zoo since baby panda was born about eight years ago now. Guess it is near time to do the zoo again. Gets expensive though now with gas and the cost of entrance. Was a zoo member for a while . Sounds like you have a busy week. Have a good one . Hope the weather is good for you . It usually is in San Diego.

The last time I was at Vicksburg, a dig was underway and our guide remarked that it was probably remains and they would be removed and reinterred at the national cemetery.
What is the policy at Shiloh? If you find remains in a single grave ( highly unlikely, but possible, I suppose) are they left undisturbed or removed? If removed, to where? If union, then I imagine to the national cemtery, but what about confederate?

Hi Ed. Tom is out of building at moment but I can give you a bit of info and then he can refine when he gets back. Last year two union soldiers, that were found by the park in 1999 at Corinth, were reinterred in their original resting place at Battery Robinett. Several years (1970's?) ago two Confederate soldiers were found in the woods at Shiloh and reintered by one of the Confederate burial trenches at Shiloh with a seperate marker. I will let Tom know so he can fill in the details a bit.

Browner is right, as always. 
If a soldier is found on the Shiloh field he will be reinterred. If evidence proves he is a Union soldier he will go to the National Cametery. If he is Confederate..well there would be certainly be some discussion about where he would moved to but I would expect it would be in the vicinity of Burial Trench No.3 which is tour stop 5 on the park tour. In the 1960's two Confederates were found just outside the park boundary and this is where they were laid to rest. The two Union soldiers that were found near Battery Robinett, though initially removed, were replaced in their original graves, as this site has been a designated burial site since Col. William Rogers of the 2nd Texas was buried there on October 5, 1862.

A follow up, if I may. I am not sure I understand the reasoning for reinterrment of remains. In the event there was a major construction project and remains were found, then I suppose I can understand the need to reinter, but if remains are found in the park (any park) why disturb them? The way I see it, an final resting place should be just that.
Again temorary burials after a battle are one thing, but after 145 years, they are no longer temporary (MHO)

wow... canon firing. Awesome! I wish I had my own napolean smoothbore (or even a Parrot rifle). lot's of smoke and lots of noise. The kid in me loves this sort of thing. It would be a different story if I had to charge a battery that was firing cannister... that wouldn't be much fun.
My friend and I are convinced that federal troops did not transport the dead in the vicinty of the bloody pond/ hornets nest any great distance. We believe, geofiz evidence notwithstahnding, that they must have buried the dead nearby.
Of course, we don't claim to be experts on much of anything. So, we could be all washed up. In anycase, it will be fun to walk around and imagine what occured.

Not sure about the Confederates found in the 1960's, but the Union ones found at Corinth in 1999 were removed before the upcoming construction of the new center. A special ceremony was conducted for their reinterment last May, and they were replaced exactly where they were found.

I am so glad it was done that way...
I think it is far more respectful to acknowlege a burial site than to reinter remains to conform to a notion of where the remains "should be"

your very welcome Ed. I am glad they did it that way too.
As part of the ceremony, they did Echo taps with 30 bugle players starting from the gravesites and spaced out through the town, to the National Cemetary as a way of " re-uniting" them with their comrades. I thought that was very moving.
