I am planning to visit Gettysburg just after Labor Day. Can you give me some tips about the weather, best time to go, places to stay, etc. Plan to be there for 2 days.

These are all just my preferences so take them as you will  I think the best place to stay is called the Holiday Inn Battlefield. I say that because it's relatively reasonable on price and it's almost right in the middle of the historic part of the town, near the shopping district, near the Jennie Wade house, its right near a tour center, there is lots of parking, and it puts you right on the road to that takes you to the new Visitor's Center it that interests you as well. In terms of the actual battlefield, you'll have to drive a bit in either direction, but the battlefield is so massive you'll have to do that anyways. Additionally a portion of the battlefield (East Cemetery Hill) and the national Cemetery are less then a five minute walk a way. The only down side to this place is that since it's a chain it's not really themed or anything like the Doubleday Inn....but it's still good. Another good place...the Doubleday Inn. A bit more expensive and hard to get reservations for, but it's a bed and breakfast right on the battlefield where the first day's action occurred. But its also outside of the town a little ways so there aren't any convenient places to walk too for food or shopping. The best time to go is on a Monday or Tuesday if you can go on one of those days. Weekends can get a bit crowded. The later in the month you go, usually the cooler it gets. (I say usually--can sometimes still stay really hot in September and early October.) If there are any other specifics you like to know keep the questions rolling. I recently stayed at the Quality Inn at General Lees HQ. It is the last building in town on Buford Avenue and sits overlooking the ridges,and opposite the Seminary, where a lot of the 1st days action took place. Good clean hotel, not expensive, and great for taking an evening stroll out on the field and over to Oak Hill. They give you free entrance to the Gen. Lee HQ museum which is the front of the hotel, small but interesting. It is about as far from the VC as you can get whilst still staying in Gettysburg but even then it is only a 5 minute drive. Also has a restaurant amd micro brewery right next door. I will certainly stay there again next time.

Quality Inn is where I stayed too. reasonable price . Drive up to your room , nice comfy room . The window of my room looked right out on the field. No frills but clean , inexpensive and comfy . It is the oldest Quality Inn left with drive up to the room . I accidently found it when I drove into town a few years ago. I think I got the last avaliable room that night. Pst Febreb I was trying to keep it my secret so I would be able to stay there again . Not make it too popular. lol.

We have always camped at the 'berg. The Holiday Inn is now Gettysburg 1863 Inn. We were there this last weekend 06/06/2009 and saw the new signage. The phone is probably still the same. I have heard the positives already expressed about the Quality Inn. If walking to down town attractions is important do not go there. The visitor center would be quite a hike from the Holiday Inn location.

Do you mean that the The Holiday Inn Battlefield is now Gettysburg 1863 Inn? The hotel thats literally right next door to the Jennie Wade House? Cause I was there in late April and I didn't see any sign of change, both literally and figuratively.

Yes the messge on the marque states it was formerly the Holiday Inn. It is at the intersection of Steinewar ave and the Baltimore Pike.

Last time I was there I stayed at Gettysburg Hotel (Best Western) in the town square..it's been there since the late 1700's and is supposedly haunted. Very nice place with a bar and restaurant and within walking distance to pretty much all of downtown. Next time I will probably go a little cheaper and closer to the actual battlefield. I must say it was definitely nice to splurge for the more upscale room for a change...just to see how the other half lives. regardless of where you stay you will have an amazing time. G-burg is like a Disneyland for ACW buffs.
