Was doing some geneology research and just came across this interesting tidbit. Daniel Webster Armistead married Mary Elizabeth Sherman Fitch. Yes, the grandson of Armistead and the granddaughter of Sherman. Go Figure. Doc C

Also, Armistead is related to R. E. Lee through his wife - Cecilia Lee Love's mother was Mathilda Lee, the daughter of Ludwell Lee and the granddaughter of Richard Henry Lee. Doc C

Doc C: Yes, I discovered that one last year too because a descendant of Armistead lives here in town and I did some research for them, kind of interesting. I'm sure you know Armistead's uncle, whom he is buried next to in Baltimore, was the commader of Ft. McHenry during the Star Spangled Banner days. Also relative to Sherman, his son Thomas is buried next to Alexander Stephens newphew, John Salter in the Jesuit cemetery in Grand Coteau, LA. As I've mentioned before in these posts, I'm distantly related to the Lee family thus it's interesting to see the myriad of cw generals who were also related to the commander. Speaking of Key, I need to visit Baltimore for one of my cemetery jaunts. An interesting tidbit regarding Sickles is his use of the fencing around lafayette park, the site of Barton Key's murder, on east cemetery hill at GB. Doc C

Lewis Armistead's father, Walker Keith Armistead, was Chief of Engineers for the defense of Chesapeke Bay during the War of 1812. He was also the first graduate of the USMA. Doc C

My grandmother can now rest in her grave. We not related by blood to W. T. Sherman. I'm related to R. E. Lee through his great grandfather's (Henry Lee) marriage to one of my acestors. This line is termed the Leesylvannia line. The Lee line linked to Armistead/Sherman is through Henry Lee's brother, Thomas. This line is termed the Stratford line, thus no family connection to mine. Doc C- Walker Armistead was not the first USMA graduate. Armistead was one of three that graduated in 1803. He is considered to be the third USMA graduate. (Cullum Number 3). ( Number 2 was Simon Levy in 1802). http://famousamericans.net/walkerkeitharmistead/ The first graduate of the USMA was Joseph Gardner Swift. He graduated on October 12, 1802. This began a Swift family tradition at West Point. His brother, William, graduated in 1819. His son, Alex, was first in his class in 1830. A grandson was also a graduate. Since you mentioned Cullum and this is a genealogy discussion, does everyone know that the Cullum biographical files are available online through the USMA site? It's great starting point for information on West Point grads, as are Henry's and Heitman's works (also currently available for free online) for civilian appointees or those raised from the ranks.

well you probblly know but Robert E Lee was married to an ancestor of George Washington, im not sure how she was related but she was i think she was his daughter.her name was Martha
