Hi, My father has said that my gg grandfather served as a doctor or surgeon during the war, but the only records I can find of who I think is he, are of rank private. In the 1870 census his occupation is listed as physician, but I can find no war records. I found this URL from the national archives, but I was hoping to find the info online vs having to visit a library or write in to have it researched. http://www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/1994/spring/confederate-medical-personnel.html Any alternatives ? Thanks.

Jeff_cw- You don't give the name of your ancestor, the state he was from, or where he might have served. Some states (Tennessee for one) have lists of physicians that served the Confederacy. Tennessee Department of State: Tennessee State Library and Archives There are some: "How to" websites that tell you how to go about obtaining information about Civil War physicians. The problem in the case of Confederate physicians is that a lot of records have been destroyed or lost. Civil War Surgeon Identification methods A list of lists might turn up something: Cyndi's List - U.S. - Civil War / War for Southern Independence This book might contain the info you are seeking: http://www.amazon.com/Doctors-Gray-Confederate-Medical-Service/dp/0807118567 Your ancestor might also have received a pension from his state for his service. Pension records can provide info about the individual's service. Good luck in your search. In the end, the National Archives info might be your best shot. Hi Texas, His name was John Hamilton Hale. He went by "Hamilton or Ham Hale", but of course he would likely have been listed as John or John H. Hale. Below is info from the family history : Born: Blue Spring, Rogersville, Hawkins County, Tennessee 1 May 1833; died c1908, Silver Springs, MS. "Hamilton Hale was a physician of prominence and served as a surgeon with the Confederate Armies during the Civil War". In 1854 he was teaching school at Chattanooga; in 1867 he was of Tippah Co, MS. From what I recall, Hamilton was back living in Rogersville prior to the war which lead me to believe he was enrolled in the 60th. However, I see that his brother below was in the 19th, Co. K. John was the youngest and had a several brothers who survived to adulthood: Philip Smith Hale, Alexander Hale, James Hale (died 26 Jan 1896 at the Confederate Veterans' Home at Nashville, Tenn). He returned from Texas to Rogersville serving in Co. K, 19th Infantry, CSA. Attached is a prison record that may be John. Note the Fulkersons whose names appear next to his. Jeff_cw- Checking the list of CSA physicians from Tennessee , I don't find your John H. Hale. That doesn't mean that he wasn't one, only that the state of Tennessee doesn't know that he was. There were apparently several John Hales serving in the 60th Tennessee Mounted Infantry. I do find a PVT John Hale in Co. F, which seems to be the one on your POW list. The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System includes him, but does not give a middle initial. None of the other John Hale listings is: "John H.," and there are no listings for a : "Hamilton Hale." It would be interesting to find out if he graduated from some medical school and when. There are other possible explanations, but they are only speculation at this time. The requirements to become a physician were quite different 150 years ago than they are now. It is possible that your John Hale assisted some physician in the field (The state records list a physician associated with the 60th TN. He was: "A.N. Harris.") and became a physician himself after the war. You said that he was a teacher in 1854. I would be interested to know how he is listed in the 1860 Census. Thank you for looking into it. I'll continue to pursue this as I get time. I don't recall seeing John H. in an 1860 census. I saw him in 1850 and 1870. I'll check that out though. Thanks again.

5Fish, even my Granddad who created the family history did not find this info about John Hamilton Hale. Thank you so much for pointing this out. There is also another reference in that book - J. H. Hale. Pg 729. Thank you so very much. Do you happen to know what a "Marshal" is responsible for? Jeff
