Like others on here I'm sure....I've been tracing my Civil War ancestors. Until today they were all Yanks in the Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky regiments. The family migrated to Indiana from North Carolina which always left me with the possibility of a Reb in the family tree. Today...I found him (possibly more) in the 33rd North Carolina. He had 4 younger brothers of military age also. I have General Grant proudly displayed behind my bar at home. I now have mixed feelings about if I should honor the Rebs also. On the bright side....the 33rd had an impressive history in the ANV.

Honor Both,More for the Rebs though<LOL>,Like Mark said family reunions will be wild. P.S. Hide the guns!!! And don't use Silver Ware.

I reenact with a Confederate artillry unit.....I study the Southern cause.....I sympathize with Confederate ideolgy (State's rights, defense of homeland).......My g-g-grandfather was Sgt. in the Union Cavalry.....Do I hate him??....No......Do I respect him??....Very much so!!....Do I wish he served with the Confederacy??....No, I am glad he followed his heart and conscious......Next year, my reenacting Unit is going to Shiloh as Fed. Infantry. We will be 10 miles from his grave. After the reenactment, we are going to his grave to fire a volley as a salute......Point is, repsect your family....Understand their point of view.....Don't apply 21st century standards, values and mores to 19th century ways of life or trends in thought.....Embrace YOUR history.....

I will honor both sides. My plans on the bar kind of got changed though. My Reb ancestor must have got a bad wound at Chancellorsville because he was out of action for about 3 months. I've been studying that battle and hope to go visit it this summer. It would be cool if I could locate the 33rd NC locations on the field. Anybody have any ideas on locating exact spots occupied by regiments during battles? His Brigade Cmdr was Lane and I think they were under AP Hill. The Yank ancestor I've studied the most was at Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, and then Sherman's March through Georgia/Carolina's. Him and the NC guy were 1st Cousins. If there were any family reunions post war....I bet they did hide the silverware and guns!

BHR62- Re: the 33rd NC- perhaps these dedicated aficionados can give you more info: 33rd Regiment North Carolina Troops Descendants Association You can also find regimental history sites online for the 33rd NC that might give you info that you are looking for. Generally speaking, good sources about positions on battlefields include maps and whatever can be found on the battle in the ORs. In the case of Chancellorsville, many maps exist, and there is a section present in the ORs. Here is one set of maps. I'm sure that many more detailed ones can be found. Thanks Texas Defender for these sites....I've been googling the 33rd NC all day and they were an impressive regiment. I had planned on joining the Sons of the Union, but the Sons of the Confederacy looks cool too. Right now I have about 8 Yanks and 1 Reb ancestors who fought in the war. I got a feeling when I dig some more it will even out.

To date over 250 ancestors (some very distant) in the civil war. Prety much 50 - 50, north/south. I honor both sides not taking sides myself. Doc Ce

Got some interesting ones myself. some rode with Quantrill, Some with Forrest and later Wheeler(2nd Ga Cav), some served in the ANV(Macon Light arty), and one actually turned coat after Corinth and donned the Yankee blue.

My dad got a first hand account of the Civil War from the local Civil War vet back in the 1930's. The guy was in his 90's by then but, would be downtown at the local store playing dominoes with the locals. He would tell of his war experiences to the young kids when they asked. My dad remembers the old guy saying how he charged up Missionary Ridge and a Reb minie ball rolled out of his shirt sleeve.

Captain Crow....my dad is a WW 2 vet of Patton's Army from Normandy until the end of the war. I've been making it a point to write down everything he has told me and asking when not sure what he told me in the past. That is amazing you've been able to find that many. I thought I was doing good finding 9! The ones I've found have all been 1st cousins 3 or 4 times removed. Honoring bothsides means having Grant-Sherman-Lee all side by side behind the bar  But I guess it must be done.

BHR62 A great deal of them are out there on a distant limb but still atached to the trunk. Many of them went head to head against one another. Doc C

Don't know about expanding the bar but I'll serve up Jim Beam....I think even Grant and the Rebs would honored with that! Also....my Reb ancestor was with AP Hill's division at Antietam.
