As an aside note, I'll be working down in Louisiana for a week starting tomorrow. You will be able to gauge how busy I am by the number of my posts. Take care everyone and have a great Mardi Gras.

I know Dr. J doesn't fit here but give me a break.
This is what keeps me working.

Doc if you have not seen Pharaoh's  Army give it a try.  It is an interesting film.   Our book discussion group at the Drum Barracks each Christmas does a movie night where we bring films to share a snippet of with the group and discuss why we like them .  The only requirement is no matter how slight they have to be related to the Civil War.  We get Shirley Temple in the Little Colonel.  One year it was Red Skeleton in a scene where he is crossing a battlefield.  He is union on one side of him and Confederate on the other, Including a double flag.  Priceless Red Skeleton humor.

We had done Red Badge of Courage, Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge.  I have share Johnny Shiloh from Disney, Journey to Shiloh a made for TV movie hokey as can be but has an anti war message as it was the 60's 1960's .  We have watch snippets of Birth of a Nation, The General, and Three Stooges , This year included the Good the Bad and the Ugly with a Glorietta Pass battle like you wouldn't believe.  in one scene I saw a morter.  We have fun share our movies and eat popcorn .

It's amazing how time, hopefully for the good, allows one to see literature in a different light. "

Amen to that, Doc C!

Reb.. RWTD is one of the all time greats in my book really showed the war here in Missouri. My only complaint with the movie is how Bloody Bill gets no mention , he is replaced by black bob wonder why that happened when you can show Capt . Quantrill. I was even in the pre shoot we were at a event  in Centralia MO doing the massacre reenactment . The director and crew came too the event and shot footage of us for like a test to show investors. The Lawrence scenes were filmed not far from here but alas I was in college and did not get to attend as a extra. I love the movie though makes me want to saddle up and ride every time.

Had an after thought since my last post . TNT had a mini series last year think it was called The way west characters were a American Settlers family and native american family during the western expansion and their story. The American (white settlers) had settled in Lawrence and were there during quantrills raid, my wife looks over at me and sees me crying and asks why (knowing my pro guerilla stance) I had never thought of the raid from the KS side of it and how the people in Lawrence felt, always jayhawkers deserved what they got kind of thing opened my eyes so to speak.

Guess you can teach a fairly old dog new tricks.

I re-watched this one last week. The first time I saw it(2001) didn't leave much of an impression -maybe because I had very little understanding of the trans-Mississippi- and I quickly forgot it. Geez was I wrong about this one! I ended up watching it 3 times in a row. This is almost as good as "Gods and Generals"...;-). Seriously though I highly recommend this movie to anyone with an interest in the ACW on film.

As a side note there is a branch of my father's family with the surname Chiles. And yes they were in the MO/KS area during the war.
