I just finished watching this via History Channel International, and I must say it was quite well done. I highly recommend it to anyone who seeks a solid, well produced documentary on this particular event. It's 2 hours long so it goes into more than the average HC detail.

Manhunt, the movie, looks kaput. However, from seeing in another cw blog, hbo is preparing a miniseries on manhunt. Any comments. Glad to be back in the USA. Doc C

Capt., Was there anything in the Booth show about the fact that Booth didn't break his leg as he jumped to the stage (caught his spur in the American flag draping the front of Lincoln's booth), but that he might have broken it afterward on the ride out of Washington? I was just reading that part in American Brutus, and found that possibility, with the evidence given in the book, new to me, and fascinating. Pam

As mentioned in past posts, American Brutus is by far better if one wishes to learn about Booth/Lincoln Assasination than Manhunt. Doc C

Doc I agree whole heartly . They aren't even in the same league research wise . Kaufman's reserach is amazing. Pam I was amazed by the broken leg information and believe it is true. I had a discussion with a woman once about it. She said well the pictures show the flag is ripped and so he did catch his spur and break his leg. I told her well the picture was taken several days after the members of the audience took cuttings of the flag and whose to say that isn't when it got ripped. As to his fall he landed on the opposite foot that he broke and he landed facing down stage not upstage as he would if he landed on the foot he broke. An actor would never land facing upstage, his back would be to the audience so he had a controlled landing . Did his dramatic turn with dagger held high Sic Semper Tyranus and off he RUNS . He also told people later he broke his leg when his horse shifted against a wall. Makes much more sense. Manhunt was I think written to be made into a movie , it reads like a screen play. Susan

I suppose anything is possible. American Brutus is on the bottom of stack #3. If he did catch his spur, I'm guessing that his planned landing went out the building. I'm also guessing that his horse brushing against the wall was a tale he told to avoid telling anyone that he broke it leaping from a balconey in Ford's Theater. But, if Kaufman gives it some weight, I'll have to pay attention when I do get around to reading that book. ole

I believe the Treasury flag is the one usually associated with being the flag Booth caught his spur in. It's on display at Ford's Theater. I saw it years ago, and it does indeed have a tear in it that would be consistent with a spur being caught in it. In addition (and I'd have to dig to find the eyewitness accounts), several witnesses in the theater that night stated that Booth" limped " off the stage after landing. Since I don't own American Brutus, could someone post his source for this? I'd appreciate it. Miss Susan - Just an FYI, the Treasury flag was stored in the treasury building beginning the day after the assasination in order to avoid being vandalized by relic hunters. The tear in it isn't at all consistent with a piece being cut out, but rather just a straight tear. But you do have me interested in reading American Brutus!

Javal according to American Brutus they were taking cuttings right then that night! Get a copy of the book and read it . I have forgotten the source but he quoted many people's eyewitness acounts. Susan

I was in Wash. in Dec. 2006 to attend a week long seninar & tour of Wash. in the Civil War. The tour with BGES was led by Ed Bearss, always a joy to be with for sure. The last day was spent on "Booths escape route", starting at Fords Theatre and ending late in the day at the site of the Garrett farm. {now empty land between two freeways} Ed talked about the broken leg of Booth and the new evidence that it was broken when his horse fell on him as they rode to the Surratt tavern. I was surprised to hear this new theory about the leg, and I am inclined to believe it as Mr. Bearss is usually pretty accurate in his history.

Javal: The eyewitnesses at Ford's Theater that night were notroiusly bad. There is a book of eyewitness accounts and it is amazing what everyone saw and how different they saw it. The actually truth is probably lost.

David: You may very wel be right. It's not that I'm a vigorous proponent of the "spur in the flag" theory, it's just that right now that's the one that makes more sense to me. That's why I asked what the source was that American Brutus used to argue otherwise. Ole: Have to work soon today, but let me know your particular area of interest and I'll se what I have tomorrow.
