New to reenacting and will be attending my first event soon as a Union Soldier.  

At the risk of being called a "FARB" not sure if just a gum blanket and wool blanket are going to cut it for sleeping at night, at least for me!

My question is did Union Soldiers use quilts or other period bedding combined with their issue bedding? 

 It would seem like quilts sent from home and other comforts would be the norm.

Extra bedding was welcome in camp. On the march, it wasn't.

Yes, a quilt gramma made was nice to have, but it would likely be found alongside the road in July.

you might also look into a shelter half. You can make a nice lean to out of it if you don't have a battle buddy with another half. Those would have been fairly common.
