Sometimes little things really irk me. Tonight on the NBC Nightly News, anchorman Brian Williams came out with this gem (I'll paraphrase) -

" ...the evacuation due to the California fires is now the largest peacetime movement of civilians since the Civil War".

Ummm, in a word - huh? Anyone else see a little problem with that statement?

Even if you give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he meant evacuations during an event rather than after it, then I still want to know how the terms "peacetime movement" and "Civil War" relate to each other. The exact quote was "The Largest Peacetime Movement of Americans Since The Civil War".

I am stil l staring at the statement hoping it would give me some insight , but not so far.  Peacetime and WAR are opposites , right ?  At least I think so.

The movement of people here in California is huge , not sure but think more people moved than in Katrina but a different type of movement so can't really tell.  No buses loading up people , or boats going from house to house.  I did hear that all the hotels all up the coast from San Diego to Long Beach are full.  That is over 100 miles apart .

Would love to ask what he meant ?

By the way fires are not near me,  just the smoke because the wind has been blowing toward the shore not away from it.  Sky above is grey.   Last night the smell of smoke was in the air.     Only problem here is breathing the bad air

Relax. Even though he makes more money in one year than you and I together coud hope for over the remainder of our lives, sometimes the magic works; sometimes it doesn't. Idiots do rise to prominence. Some even get to be president.

Susan,

Good to hear the fire's not near you. But keep alert.

As for the quote, I've found two others (CNN & the New York Post) using the Civil War analogy, but both left out the "peaceful" part - saying simply "the largest civilian evacuation since the Civil War".

Rita's evacuation topped Katrina's, BTW.

The fact that so many didn't evacuate or evacuated after the fact was the problem in NO.  BTW, the after the fact evacuations were N.P. Banks' fault, when he went up the Red River and brought back the human "contraband," they were forced to settle in what became the Fith Ward all under sea level and not prime land.
