Like (I'm guessing) many of you, I buy books I already have. I'm currently sitting on three:
Lee; The Soldier. A selection of writings collected and edited by Gary Gallagher.
Wild Rose; Rose O'Neale Greenhow, Civil War Spy, by Ann Blackman.
Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation; The End of Slavery in America. Allen Guelzo.
This is not a thread sponsored by cwi. It's strictly between you and me. If you want to swap one of yours for one of mine. I mail you mine and you mail me yours. Postage (media mail) runs less than $3.00 and takes about 7 business days for delivery.
If you just want to thin your library and want to trade off a book you don't intend to read again, why not? I have some of those too.
All are hardbound. The Lincoln and Lee books are in bodart wrapping. The Wild Rose book is nekkid with dust jacket. All are in at least fine condition: tight binding, never opened.
Just let me know which you want and what you have to trade for it.

Great idea Ole. Two questions:
1) is this a permanent swap, or would you basically be "lending" to each other?
2) Is it confined to Civil War only, all history, or all books regardless of topic?

Permanent on the three books mentioned. (They're duplicates -- that'll learn me to bring a list to book sales.) I don't see why others couldn't set up a lending library.
Whether it remains CW or opens out is more your choice than mine. I have a number of other history books I wouldn't mind swapping for CW books I don't have.

I really like this idea. I for one read 90% of my books once, then never pick them up again.
The idea of flat-out swap rather than a "lending" alleviates all the hassle with multiple shipping charges.
If enough people show an interest, I can open a whole new category just for the book swap. This would enable everyone to open a thread listing books they're willing to trade by category. Personally, I'd like to see it open to all books, Civil War or not, history or not, non-fiction or not. If you're willing to participate, show some interest in this thread and we'll see where it goes.

Well Bama (and I'm just thinking out loud here), if we started a new category, we could have threads for each person who wanted to participate. For example the threads would be "ole's books" , "Bama's books", "javal1's books" etc....
Within your thread you would list (again, just an example):
"A Soldier to the Last: Maj. Gen. Joseph Wheeler in Blue and Gray" by Edward Longacre. (PB) (Fair condition)
Book #2....
Book #3...
(PB) being paperback. Then your thread would be strictly for people offering swaps or asking questions about your book.
For general questions, we could have a thread called something like F.A.Q. and General Questions.
Plus. because it's your thread, you could always go to your original post to add more books or delete books no longer available. I really think it's something that could be fun and unique.

Sounds like you've made a major improvement in the idea already, Javal. The individual threads under a category solves the problems inherent in the clamorous confusion of everybody talking at once.
I started the same thing on another board and it got interest until the thread slowly sank out of sight under the weight of newer threads. I no longer remember where that thread was opened.
Sounds like a plan. Gonna start making a list.

A question kind sir.....
In the event that I do not have a book to swap, can I trade greenbacks for a book, or is that verboten on the site?
I don't have any duplicates and like my firearms, once acquired, books are NEVER disposed of.
Old books are like old friends..to be taken care of, cherished and never thrown away!

Bama,
For several reasons, including some archaic tax laws, we need to avoid any buying/selling on the site. HOWEVER, what you folks do via PM or e-mail, where I have no knowledge of such, is of course up to you....
