The first field hospital ever on a battlefield occurred at Shiloh... I am certain there are many articles and sites describing this, but I have not searched any of them...
This represented a huge advance in medicine, as doctors were actually present on the battlefield.
From this event, came our present day battlefield medical units.. imbedded medics, aid stations, MASH units, and even trauma centers, paramedics and ambulances here in the US..
Instead of a paper on the LIMITATIONS of CW medicine, you could do one on this tremendous advance in medicine

To look at ACW medical advances & Limitations you also have to take a look at those made in the Crimea a scant decade earlier. Many of the advances of the ACW were heralded & began in the Crimea by British & French doctors.

Wish I could help with your paper, DG, but I know nothing about the subject. You've been given some excellent suggestions, and you might consider patterning your paper around some of them.
Medical conditions were, as we now know, quite primitive. but we have also seen that the Crimean war and the US Civil war represent quite positive turning points in battlefield medicine. (Crimean equals Florence Nightingale. USCW and the Red Cross equals Clara Barton. A good human interest story in that some recognized that what was being done -- officially -- was not enough.)
A good examination into what was to become a major change. The nature of germs and sterility were emerging. A point in time where medicine made some great strides and became what we might call merely primitive -- a time of learning and awakening.
Maybe your hook is in what was learned and who contributed to that learning?

Another hook might be how the use of medicines has changed. Vinegar was used as an anti diarria med, Mercury used to be ingested for a variety of illnesses, Listerine (the mouthwash) used to be an anti lice shampoo etc.

Listerine was at one time a horse linament
Today, it is a pretty effective mosquito repellant...
even the generic veresions will repel mosquitos..just wipe your exposed skin with the stuff and you will not get bit

Bama is quite right; I had forgotten it's use for horses... never really knew what for though. Also didn't know about it being able to repel the MN state bird. Listerine... good for everything!

I've lived in SC and done excercises in NC, AL, MISS, TX & GA. Trust me; all a MN skeeter is missing is a stewerdess to make one an admiriable airliner.

Minnesota skeeters are regularly implicated in the disappearance of small animals and occasionally children. North Carolina skeeters are small taters, comparatively.
If you'd like to compare chiggers and fire ants, then NC has an edge. And let's not get into blizzards.

Fireants and cockroaches... you southerners can keep. I do swear skeeters up in this neck of the woods come equipped w/ bomb racks.

Nope we don't want em, we were always afraid to kill them in the barracks... we were worried about the size of the burial party and the pall bearers.
