The book " Stealing the General" was a terrific read. It would make a truly exciting action film and I am not referring to the original sappy-dappy Disney version with Fess Parker in the 1960s called "The gReat Locomotive Chase." With today's film techniques and some cracker jack actors, I believe this true story could be a tense thriller from start to finish. You are out of touch...or the years are slippin by.... the "slappy dappy".. what a great phrase, (It will get used again, believe me)version with Mr Parker was made in the '50's..... we were Waaaay to sophisticated by the '60's to watch that stuff... weren't we!

My bad. You are so right. Fess Parker was too wholesome for 1960s taste. Even toddlers were too sophisticated by the 60s for that old Disney stuff.

Exciting news! At the movies today I saw a poster for the new corrupt cop movie "Pride and Glory" starring Edward Norton and Colin Farrell. Norton sports stubbly chin hair, straggly mustache and a cheek "scar." His eyes have the blazing fire of a Patrick Cleburne sitting on Red Pepper getting ready to send forward his men. I saw right then and there that Edward Norton could, indeed, play Cleburne.
Farrell could play an infantry brigade commander or a cavalry guy but he does not have the right look at all for Cleburne.
I'm still looking around for the right folks for Hood and Forrest. I think Viggo Mortensen could play a very credible Forrest based on his appearnce and role in "Appaloosa."

The third book of the trilogy, Their Fullest Measure. Duvall as Lee and Beringer as Longstreet. It needs to be a TNT production as the studio production and the bad direction screwed up Gods and Generals too much.

Pam,
"Marching through Culpeper" is a Civil War novel by Virginia Beard Morton. All the characters are real people except the heroine and her family. It's about the Civil War in Culpeper County, VA, told from the viewpoint of the civilians who suffered so much during the war. It's the only novel I've ever read with footnotes, such as "The hotel building still stands, but is now a bank." In my opinion it's the best novel of that era.
I've heard that Mrs. Morton has been approached to make it into a TV miniseries. That would be terrific. It would have battles and gore, scary adventures and escapes, murder, romance, sex, beautiful ballgowns, and handsome soldiers like "The Gallant Pelham."

Sounds like the perfect Civil War story, Widow--a little of everything for everyone! I haven't heard of it before.
Has anyone lately been to any of the battlefield visitors centers that could use a new orientation film? Or one that has a good one? The last time I was in the Chancellorsville VC (not the Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania one but the one right on the Chancellorsville battlefield) there was still a slideshow, and that wasn't all that long ago.
And let's not get started on the new film at the Gettysburg VC. . .

The film I saw at New Market which is not National Park but VMI has a really good film on the Field of Lost Shoes.
I also liked the Shelby Foote one at Brices Crossroad . Another private visitors center .

I realize I'm getting on to this thread somewhat late, but here goes, anyway...there is a WTBS movie in "pre-production" called Cleburne, scheduled to be released in 2011. Here's the link: Cleburne Movie
Only a few of the acting slots are filled right now: Pat Cleburne = Jonathan Rhys-Myers, William Hardee = Michael Rooker, Bedford Forrest = Trace Adkins, Braxton Bragg = Martin Kove. Hopefully, their beards will be an improvement over Tom Berenger's in Gettysbeard & Gods and Generals.
Hopefully (#2), this too won't be another box office flop, but I'm not holding my breath...

Since I see it is based on the graphic novel I don't give it much hope as from what I have read of the novel it doesn't stay true to Cleburne and his life .
