Dixie Girl and Reb - I was ten when I started reenacting. That was 25 years ago. For several years, I was colonel of a battalion. Now, I’m a staff officer. I’ve also written eight books and had published article in most major magazines.

I’ve met some very racist reenactors over the years. I’ve met even more racist civilians for the lack of a better word. This past fall, we were putting on a living history for a local museum, and we had a women from New York bless us out for 30 minutes about us being racist - and I was wearing the blue suit. I have been called a racist, a nazi, and a few other things that I care not to repeat. Once, I was marching in a parade in the blue suit and someone yelled out baby killed. We were in the South, and my company had only dawned the blue for the parade. Ole is right - you must learn to shrug if off and not let it get to you.

Something along the same lines as equally disturbing is the apathy that most people regard their history with. At least if they are blurting out derogatory remarks concerning my parents there is some level of thinking going on. It seems that most people could care less.
