I would say 'Saving Pvt. Clewell, er Ryan' as No. 1, followed by 'Das Boot" at 1A. Both for their unrelenting realism and the horrors of war.

Best Civil War movie might be 'Glory.'

But you know, 'Red Badge of Courage' is not bad. Directed by John Huston and starring a real WWII hero in Audie Murphy, it tells a pretty good tale. Shot in black and white in 1951, it's worth another look. Not bad for Hollywood. Bill Mauldin, the WWII 'Willie and Joe' cartoonist, also has a role.
